Your One Responsible PartnerĀ® for Automation, Presses & Tooling
AP&T > Press Hardening

A Partnership Success Story:

Cooperation Allows Creation of a New More Effective and Efficient Press Hardening Process For Automotive Industry

AP&T (Automated Press & Tooling) and Hwashin (a leading Korean manufacturing company) partnered to develop an innovative new press hardening process for the automotive industry which reduces both costs and time.

About Our Companies:

AP&T is a leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of automation, presses from hydraulic to tangent and tools including press hardening tools and press repairs tools. AP&T also offers a complete production line for both the sheet metal and tube forming industry. With offices around the world, our clients include some of the leading subcontractors in the automotive, domestic appliance and indoor climate industries.

Hwashin Co. Ltd. is a leading manufacturer of automobile chassis and body parts and has been a leading player in the Korean automotive industry. Specializing in the manufacture of automotive parts tied to durability, performance and fuel efficiency, Hwashin focuses on development, diversification and optimization of materials.

One of Hwashin’s development goals was the development of a press hardening process that could produce a stronger product.

Our Partnership Goal:

Keeping with our respective visions for the development of this streamlined press hardening process, Hwashin and AP&T partnered to utilize our combined knowledge in order to develop a process that could ultimately revolutionize the production of automobile components from both a time and cost savings standpoints.

What was the need for a more effective press hardening process?

Increasing competition in the growing automotive industry has catalyzed interest and development in the production of new more innovative processes for components in order to reduce overall costs and increase profit margins.

With cost considerations influencing overall product viability, manufacturers of components have also sought to also improve quality and strength.

Using AP&T’s knowledge regarding presses of all types of hydraulic presses including the following types of presses:

  • Bailing hydraulic presses
  • Polyurethane hydraulic presses
  • Hydraulic press control systems
  • Varying strength hydraulic press systems such as:
    • 3 cylinder hydraulic press
    • 4 post hydraulic post
    • 12 ton hydraulic press
    • 20 ton hydraulic press
    • 200 ton hydraulic press
    • 250 ton hydraulic press
    • 300 ton hydraulic press
    • 350 ton hydraulic press
    • 1000 ton hydraulic press
    • 1500 ton hydraulic press
    • 2000 ton hydraulic press

Based on our knowledge of varying degrees of hydraulic presses, AP&T worked with Hwashin to determine which product offered the best solution and to provide the customization necessary to ensure that the product meet the needs of any potential users.

Ultimately, AP&T and Hwashin were able to create a product that boasted a host of benefits, more so that were initially targeted including the following:

Benefits of the New Press Hardening System:
  • Increased strength
  • Lighter components
  • lower manufacturing cost
    • production is faster and more efficient
  • ability to exceed manufacturers’ demands for strength and weight by a wide margin
    • up to triple the strength
  • high degree of hardness with less work process
    • forming and hardening occur in the same process
    • cooling time for materials is decreased

Of course, any success story whether it be related to hydraulic presses or the press hardening system itself is only as compelling as the success with regard to the overall implementation.

From Concept to Implementation:

Ø By mid 2008, the first cars with press hardened torsion bar axles will roll out of Hyundai's factories.

Ø The new press hardening process will then be implemented in Hwashin's other production plants across the world.

Our success with in this venture has ultimately culminated in an ongoing partnership with Hwashin to develop other products geared toward the automotive industry.

Future Incarnations:

AP&T and Hwashin are now working toward creating a cost-efficient method for remachining axle ends with the underlying focus on cost reductions tied to overall component improvements.

AP&T is a company with a progressive-mindset who strives to stay ahead of the cusp of business development.

With that in mind, AP&T continues to seek the most innovative solutions for both our partners, customers and ultimately the end consumer.
